Transwasco has issued a detailed response to concerns raised by residents of Trans Nzoia County regarding the current water service provision and tariff structure. The company clarified two primary issues: the adjustment of water charges and the challenges inherited from the former service provider, Nzowasco.
1. Doubling of Charges:
The current tariff, which has raised concerns among residents, was introduced by the Water Services Regulatory Board (Wasreb) for the FY 2023/24. Nzowasco, the previous water service provider, had operated under a tariff unchanged for over eight years, violating the regulation that tariffs be reviewed every five years. Public participation meetings were held jointly by Wasreb and Nzowasco to ensure transparency before the new tariff was gazetted, effective from July 1, 2024. Transwasco inherited this tariff and did not initiate the changes.
2. Challenges in Water Supply:
Upon its establishment, Transwasco took over a company struggling with operational inefficiencies and financial debts. Key water schemes, including Kabolet and Nzoia, are functioning at significantly reduced capacities. Kabolet, with a capacity of 10,500 cubic meters, currently processes only 9,000 cubic meters daily, while Nzoia operates at 3,500 cubic meters instead of its full capacity of 9,000. This has led to reduced water pressure and inconsistent supply in several areas, including Cherangani, Kitale town, Waitaluk, Sirende, and Milimani.
Governor George Natembeya, as part of his manifesto, pledged to ensure access to clean and safe water for all residents, and Transwasco remains dedicated to achieving this goal. The company is planning significant upgrades to increase the capacity of both water schemes to their original design specifications. However, this will require substantial investment and time due to the need for major repairs, rehabilitation, and the replacement of expensive equipment.
While the process will take time, Transwasco is confident that with the support of the community, these challenges will be addressed, leading to better water services in the future. The company urges residents to embrace the changes and help build a more efficient water service provider.
